Hey Creative Souls!
Journalling has been proven very beneficial to get ourselves in a better mood, to relieve stress and most importantly provides us a medium to express ourselves. But the extent of its merits doesn’t only restrict itself in the realm of wellness. What if I told you that journalling is a perfect and the most inexpensive way to actually boost your creativity?I
know, I was shocked to hear that too. So I started researching and learning more about it and I found some great journalling prompts that can actually spark creative ideas and puts us in a creative zone.
I treat journalling as a personal therapy session where I can say, in this case write, anything I want. So why not feel free doing it and also use it as a medium to boost our creativity. Here are some prompts that you should try for your next journalling session.
I found out about this technique while listening to an audio book on improv. All you do here is pick up an object. If you need some inspiration, just look around your room where you are or literally in front of you. You will definitely find something, it can be anything, even the phone charger right in front of you. Now imagine you are that object and start writing a monologue in the first person or first object. Write anything that comes to mind. Object’s life’s journey, its origin, its daily tasks that the object will achieve, literally anything that comes to mind. Don’t judge yourself while you are scripting this masterpiece of yours. The goal here is give birth to new ideas and push yourself to think differently.
For example: “I am an acoustic guitar and my name is Charlie. I have six strings, each tuned to a different frequency which makes me really special because I have the ability to create a unique sound when each of the strings are played separately. This morning I woke up with a beautiful melody played just using the high E string. I could even feel the vibrations and the ode of joy that was played through me for quite some time. Right now I am hung up on a wall hanger and remembering all those late night jam sessions where the spotlight was on me. Oh, that feeling when you are the star of the show. Every note played through me, ignited a priceless emotion for the listeners. Even though I didn’t receive anything in response but the realization from the guitar player, that it turned out to be an amazing jam session and that I played a crucial role in making that happen, was enough for me to get a good night sleep at the end of my work day.”
Did you see? This prompt helps shifts perspective and forces us to think from a unique angle which we haven’t done before. It ignites imagination and helps create with new ideas. The ordinary becomes extraordinary when you allow yourself to see the world through the eyes of an object. Besides doing this exercise, it’s about having fun and let your creativity flow. No rules, no judgements and there is no right way of doing it. Just enjoy and have fun. Start your morning journalling routine with this technique and you will witness the positivity throughout your day,
This prompt puts you in the driver seat as an inventor. Think about something that is missing from your life. Something that you have been wanting for a while. Regardless of how big or small it is, you just need to imagine yourself inventing it. Begin by describing the problem this invention will solve. As you set the premise for your invention, write about how it works and how is it going to change your life. Once you have the basics of this invention scripted out, you can go into details of the various features it will have. Also, don’t forget the add-ons and the accessories that you can bundle up with your invention. You can go all crazy and wild here with you creation, just let your creative juices flow and see what it can unfold into.
For example: “What if there was a creativity-boosting tea that gave you instant inspiration after one sip? It would come in flavours like 'Eureka Berry' and 'Aha Mint,' with packaging that doubles as a notebook for your ideas. This tea will be a creativity-booster that will increase your chances to get into the flow state. This tea is guaranteed to spark up new ideas whenever you are stuck with any problem.”
This technique can really help you tap into your problem solving skills and encourages innovative thinking. Who knows, your journalling might lead to a real world invention and your next breakthrough idea.
Write a letter to your future self. Share your dreams, struggles, and what you hope to achieve. Ask your future self questions about how they’ve grown or what they’ve accomplished.
For example: “Dear Future Me, I hope you’ve finally finished that book idea you’ve been thinking about for years. Have you found a better balance between work and play? What advice would you give me now?”
